"- Ere I am, J.H. The gost in the machine. A possible reference to Hamlet, later confirmed by the relationship between Mr. Helpmann (the king) and Mrs. Ida (the hero's mother). The J.H. initials are another mistery, as Sam's father should be J.L. (Jeremiah Lowry), and Mr. Helpmann's E.H. (Eugene Helpmann). Has Mr. Helpmann confused Jeremiah's name (and role in society) with his own?
